Arctiidae: Elektron Octatrack arrangement & all Puremagnetik samples.

Arctiidae by Micah Frank

Arctiidae is a self-evolving arrangement built entirely with an Elektron Octatrack. My goal was to move away from the computer and program the Octatrack with extensive timing and sound modulations. Most sounds have at least 2 simultaneous LFOs morphing their assigned voices. The end result is not fixed and the arrangement sounds different each time “play” is activated. Arctiidae uses all Puremagnetik samples.

Ableton Live Instrument: Xenogenetic - A goat and a woman morphed, resynthesized and put through a tweed amplifier.

Xenogenetic Demo by Micah Frank

Xenogenetic is a multisample instrument for Ableton Live that morphs the frequency and amplitude envelopes of a goat “bahhh” into a female vocal. From there they are picked apart, additively resynthesized, resonated and put through a feedback loop. Then they are subjected to convolution processes from within a tweed amplifier. Well… hopefully it will never happen to you or your pets. Download Xenogenetic Live Pack

Sonification of Earthquakes off the Coast of Honshu, Japan - Friday March 11, 2011

Earthquakes off the east coast of Honshu, Japan - Friday March 11, 2011 by Micah Frank

Sonification of the incredible seismic activity off the coast of Honshu, Japan - Friday March 11th.

This is only a selection of 20 or so individual readings. At the time of this recording, earthquakes are ongoing as there have been almost 40 readings in the past 8 hours.

UPDATE: As more readings come in that result in interesting generations I will post throughout the day on SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/micahfrank

Tectonic is a realtime seismic analysis and sound synthesis system. Sound is created in realtime by earthquakes as they occur across the globe. A tightly integrated system between Max/MSP, Google Earth and Symbolic Sound’s Kyma processes earthquake data that is translated into sound synthesis parameters. A USGS XML feed is parsed into numerous fields including magnitude, elevation, time of day and geographical coordinates. These data are mapped to synthetic spectrums and processed by granular, aggregate and subtractive synthesis.

Free Sonification Compilation & Ableton Live Instrument

Tectonic by MicahFrank

The Tectonic compilation includes almost an hour of earthquake sonifications that can be listened to as a full length album, or played as an instrument in Ableton Live. The Live instrument includes over 30 high quality samples arranged as a menu of soundscapes.

The compilation’s source material originated from US Geological Survey data, parsed by Cycling 74’s Max/MSP and synthesized in Symbolic Sound’s Kyma X. Read more about Tectonic

Onda Hybrid Instruments Demo

A quick demo from the upcoming Onda library I’m developing. Onda is a collection of fictitious instruments physically modeled in Kyma. This showcases hybrid instruments Bowed Crystal, Guitar with a water-like resonator, a tuned drum with “plucking” characteristics and a steel drum/harp sorta thingy.

Interview for Wire to the Ear

I recently spoke on the IMSTA Festa Technology panel with Wire to the Ear’s Oliver Chesler. We followed up with this short Q&A: http://www.wiretotheear.com/2010/09/29/interview-with-micah-frank-of-puremagnetik/
