Ableton Live Rack : Whales In Ouzo

Whales in Ouzo uses 2 trombone samples granularly resynthesized in Kyma and processed through 2 separate parallel delay lines each with a dual formant filter.

Ableton Live Rack - Granular Marimbas

Granular Marimbas was created by combining two identical marimba samples and resynthesizing them in Kyma’s Sample Cloud.

Ableton Live Instrument: Xenogenetic - A goat and a woman morphed, resynthesized and put through a tweed amplifier.

Xenogenetic Demo by Micah Frank

Xenogenetic is a multisample instrument for Ableton Live that morphs the frequency and amplitude envelopes of a goat “bahhh” into a female vocal. From there they are picked apart, additively resynthesized, resonated and put through a feedback loop. Then they are subjected to convolution processes from within a tweed amplifier. Well… hopefully it will never happen to you or your pets. Download Xenogenetic Live Pack

Ableton Live Instrument : Bald Eagle and Male Vocal Cross-Synthesized

Seraphim is a multisample Ableton Live instrument created by cross-synthesizing a North American Bald Eagle with a male vocal. The resulting sound was then put through a long decay resonator whose center frequency follows the chromatic pitch.

Free Sonification Compilation & Ableton Live Instrument

Tectonic by MicahFrank

The Tectonic compilation includes almost an hour of earthquake sonifications that can be listened to as a full length album, or played as an instrument in Ableton Live. The Live instrument includes over 30 high quality samples arranged as a menu of soundscapes.

The compilation’s source material originated from US Geological Survey data, parsed by Cycling 74’s Max/MSP and synthesized in Symbolic Sound’s Kyma X. Read more about Tectonic

Free Samples : Digital Blasphemy (The Sound of Wrongness)

What happens when you do everything wrong? Digital Blasphemy contains excerpts from an afternoon jam I had in Kyma. Raw and unedited, do what you like with it. Mistreated waveshapers, hyper-resonating pulses, harshly modulating synthetic spectrums run through overdriven compression, non-harmonic ring-modulated frequency controllers…. the list goes on. If it’s wrong, I think I did it.

I personally find it very useful to cut up some bits to make a glitchy (think Alva Noto) kit. Enjoy!

For the Able10 anniversary, I made a Live Pack that expands on some of the kits, grooves and Live Racks in my scrapyard of sounds. I built the song ‘Metropolis’ around the sounds and called in Atarah Valentine to lay down the vocals. The Live Pack is filled with very expressive kits that you can download for free here: http://www.ableton.com/able10-artist-packs

I was sending sysex data to my Machinedrum the other day when suddenly it began blurting out the most digitally obscene sounds I have ever heard from it! I was a little offended and you might be too once you hear them. This is the stuff I love – when a piece of gear generates sounds that it could never create under its normal operating mode.
I took some time today to program a drum kit and then some Live Racks that cycle through various samples repeatedly while simultaneously jumping between sample offsets every 10ms or so creating interesting transients. Here’s a quick mp3 demo and a download link for the Live Pack. Enjoy!
This pack is now available as a free Puremagnetik download here.

MidiNES Editor – MidiNES_Editor_Live.zip
The MidiNES is in fact a pretty cool little toy to have in the studio. This is an Ableton Live based editor I created for it a while back. For those of you that own these plastic bricks of eighties nostalgia, just load up the included session file and open midi tracks for channels 1-5.
