Xenogenetic is a multisample instrument for Ableton Live that morphs the frequency and amplitude envelopes of a goat “bahhh” into a female vocal. From there they are picked apart, additively resynthesized, resonated and put through a feedback loop. Then they are subjected to convolution processes from within a tweed amplifier. Well… hopefully it will never happen to you or your pets. Download Xenogenetic Live Pack
This compilation of original music and sound has been generated in the days immediately following the staggering 9.0 earthquake which ravished Japan, and is released in support of the ongoing rescue and reconstruction efforts ongoing today.
Many of these tracks used Tectonic sonifications as source material. Listen to the album in its entirety and please consider contributing to one of the listed organizations. http://mcrpmusic.bandcamp.com/album/n-n-1-fall-n-rise-n-1
My company Puremagnetik has just launched a page for the SXSW4Japan fundraiser. Our humble goal is set at $1400. We are matching all donations with their value in subscriptions.

In the 2nd half of 2008, I brought various drum machines with me wherever I traveled. In passing time I documented the machines in different locations, collecting a visual and aural diary - from hotel rooms in LA to driving through the Canadian wilderness to my home in Brooklyn. This visual adventure has uniquely encapsulated an important period of my life that isn’t expressed in words or photos, but ‘bleeps’ and ‘blips’.
While the audio was overdubbed in post-production, the sound sources accurately represent the machine depicted.
Sonification of the incredible seismic activity off the coast of Honshu, Japan - Friday March 11th.
This is only a selection of 20 or so individual readings. At the time of this recording, earthquakes are ongoing as there have been almost 40 readings in the past 8 hours.
UPDATE: As more readings come in that result in interesting generations I will post throughout the day on SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/micahfrank
Tectonic is a realtime seismic analysis and sound synthesis system. Sound is created in realtime by earthquakes as they occur across the globe. A tightly integrated system between Max/MSP, Google Earth and Symbolic Sound’s Kyma processes earthquake data that is translated into sound synthesis parameters. A USGS XML feed is parsed into numerous fields including magnitude, elevation, time of day and geographical coordinates. These data are mapped to synthetic spectrums and processed by granular, aggregate and subtractive synthesis.
Ableton Live Instrument : Bald Eagle and Male Vocal Cross-Synthesized
Seraphim is a multisample Ableton Live instrument created by cross-synthesizing a North American Bald Eagle with a male vocal. The resulting sound was then put through a long decay resonator whose center frequency follows the chromatic pitch.
The Tectonic compilation includes almost an hour of earthquake sonifications that can be listened to as a full length album, or played as an instrument in Ableton Live. The Live instrument includes over 30 high quality samples arranged as a menu of soundscapes.
The compilation’s source material originated from US Geological Survey data, parsed by Cycling 74’s Max/MSP and synthesized in Symbolic Sound’s Kyma X. Read more about Tectonic

A quick demo from the upcoming Onda library I’m developing. Onda is a collection of fictitious instruments physically modeled in Kyma. This showcases hybrid instruments Bowed Crystal, Guitar with a water-like resonator, a tuned drum with “plucking” characteristics and a steel drum/harp sorta thingy.
Recording glass IRs to process in Kyma for Puremagnetik’s Onda library. Onda will be a multi-sampled hybrid instrument collection structured from Harm Visser’s Kyma Physical Modeling Toolkit but utilizing new source material.
